Ingredients

  • 1 block Extra firm tofu
  • 3 tablespoons Cornstarch
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 4 tablespoons Vegetable oil
  • 0.5 cup Fresh orange juice
  • 2 tablespoons Soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons Maple syrup
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Ginger, grated
  • 1 teaspoon Cornstarch (for sauce)
  • 2 tablespoons Water
  • 1 teaspoon Sesame seeds
  • 2 stalks Green onions, sliced

Directions

Step 1

Remove the tofu from its packaging and press it to remove excess moisture. You can do this by placing the block of tofu between two plates and setting a heavy object (like a can) on top for 10-15 minutes. Pat it dry with a clean kitchen towel and cut it into 1-inch cubes.

Step 2

In a medium-sized mixing bowl, toss the tofu cubes with 3 tablespoons of cornstarch, salt, and black pepper until evenly coated.

Step 3

Heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a large non-stick skillet over medium-high heat. Add the tofu in a single layer and cook for 4-5 minutes on each side, flipping carefully, until golden brown and crispy. Remove the tofu from the skillet and set it aside on a plate lined with paper towels.

Step 4

In the same skillet, add the remaining 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil. Sauté the minced garlic and grated ginger for 1 minute until fragrant.

Step 5

In a small bowl, whisk together the orange juice, soy sauce, rice vinegar, and maple syrup. Add the mixture to the skillet and bring it to a gentle simmer.

Step 6

In another small bowl, mix 1 teaspoon of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of water until smooth. Slowly stir the slurry into the orange sauce in the skillet, cooking for 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens.

Step 7

Add the crispy tofu back into the skillet, tossing to coat it evenly with the orange sauce.

Step 8

Transfer the tofu to a serving dish and sprinkle with sesame seeds and sliced green onions for garnish.

Step 9

Serve immediately with steamed rice or stir-fried vegetables for a complete meal. Enjoy!
