Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 0.5 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest
  • 0.25 cup orange juice
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 5 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 0.75 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 large orange orange slices, thinly sliced

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Lightly grease a 9-inch round baking dish or cake pan.

Step 2

In a small saucepan, melt 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter over low heat. Stir in the brown sugar and cook for 1-2 minutes until fully dissolved. Remove from heat and mix in the orange zest and orange juice.

Step 3

Pour the butter-brown sugar mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading it evenly over the bottom. Arrange the thinly sliced orange rounds in a single layer on top of the mixture.

Step 4

In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, and granulated sugar.

Step 5

Using a pastry cutter or your fingertips, cut the 5 tablespoons of cold, cubed butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.

Step 6

Create a well in the center of the dry ingredients and add the milk and vanilla extract. Stir gently until just combined. Do not overmix.

Step 7

Dollop the biscuit dough over the orange slices and spread gently to cover the fruit. The surface does not have to be perfectly smooth.

Step 8

Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 18-20 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown and cooked through.

Step 9

Remove from the oven and let cool for 5 minutes. Carefully invert onto a serving plate so the orange slices are on top.

Step 10

Serve warm, either on its own or with whipped cream for an added treat.
