Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 cup Granulated sugar
  • 1.5 teaspoons Baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 cup Unsalted butter (softened)
  • 0.5 cup Milk
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 2 pieces Large eggs
  • 0.25 cup Orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon Cornstarch
  • 3 drops Orange food coloring
  • 2 cups Powdered sugar
  • 0.5 cup Additional unsalted butter (softened, for frosting)
  • 2 tablespoons Heavy whipping cream
  • 3 drops Black food coloring

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 12-cup muffin tin with cupcake liners.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.

Step 3

Add the softened butter, milk, and vanilla extract. Mix on low speed until just combined.

Step 4

Beat in the eggs one at a time until the batter is smooth and creamy. Do not overmix.

Step 5

Divide the batter evenly among the cupcake liners, filling each about two-thirds full.

Step 6

Bake for 16-18 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a cupcake comes out clean. Allow to cool completely.

Step 7

To make the orange ooze filling, combine orange juice, cornstarch, and 3 drops of orange food coloring in a small saucepan. Whisk until smooth.

Step 8

Cook over medium heat, whisking constantly, until the mixture thickens into a glossy consistency. Remove from heat and let it cool completely.

Step 9

Using a spoon or a small knife, cut a small hole in the middle of each cooled cupcake (about 1-inch deep). Save the cupcake tops.

Step 10

Fill each hole with a spoonful of the orange filling and place the removed tops back on to cover.

Step 11

To make the frosting, beat the softened butter and powdered sugar together until light and fluffy. Add the cream and beat until the frosting is smooth.

Step 12

Split the frosting into two bowls. Tint one bowl with 3 drops of orange food coloring and the other with 3 drops of black food coloring. Mix until the colors are even.

Step 13

Using a piping bag fitted with a star tip, alternate adding the orange and black frosting to create a swirl effect.

Step 14

Pipe the frosting onto each cupcake and add any spooky decorations desired!

Step 15

Serve and enjoy the gooey orange surprise inside when bitten into!
