Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon Baking powder
  • 0.25 teaspoons Salt
  • 0.5 cups Unsalted butter, softened
  • 0.75 cups Brown sugar, packed
  • 1 large Egg
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 1 cup Chopped dates
  • 0.75 cups Chopped walnuts
  • 0.75 cups Powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons Orange juice, freshly squeezed
  • 1 teaspoon Orange zest

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease or line an 8x8-inch baking pan with parchment paper.

Step 2

In a medium bowl, whisk together all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.

Step 3

In a larger mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.

Step 4

Beat the egg into the butter mixture, followed by the vanilla extract, until well combined.

Step 5

Gradually add the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.

Step 6

Fold in the chopped dates and walnuts, ensuring they are evenly distributed throughout the batter.

Step 7

Spread the batter evenly into the prepared baking pan, smoothing the top with a spatula.

Step 8

Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Step 9

While the bars are baking, prepare the orange glaze: In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, orange juice, and orange zest until smooth.

Step 10

Once the bars are finished baking, remove them from the oven and allow to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes.

Step 11

While the bars are still slightly warm, drizzle or spread the orange glaze evenly over the top.

Step 12

Let the bars cool completely before slicing into 16 squares or rectangles. Serve and enjoy!
