Ingredients

  • 3.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.25 cups granulated sugar
  • 2.25 teaspoons instant yeast
  • 0.5 teaspoons salt
  • 1 cups whole milk
  • 0.25 cups unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons orange zest
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons orange juice
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoons vanilla extract

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, instant yeast, and salt. Mix until well combined.

Step 2

In a small saucepan, heat the milk and butter over low heat until the butter is melted and the mixture is warm to the touch but not hot. Remove from heat.

Step 3

Add the warm milk mixture, orange zest, and egg to the dry ingredients. Stir to form a shaggy dough.

Step 4

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic, or knead using a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook for 5-6 minutes.

Step 5

Form the kneaded dough into a ball and place it in a lightly greased bowl. Cover with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Step 6

Punch down the risen dough and transfer it to a lightly floured surface. Divide the dough into 12 equal portions and shape each portion into a smooth ball.

Step 7

Place the shaped dough balls onto a greased or parchment-lined baking pan, leaving a small gap between each bun. Cover the pan with a towel and let the buns rise for 30-40 minutes, or until puffy.

Step 8

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Once the buns have risen, bake them for 18-22 minutes, or until golden brown on top.

Step 9

While the buns are baking, prepare the glaze by whisking together powdered sugar, orange juice, and vanilla extract in a small bowl. Adjust the consistency by adding more orange juice if needed.

Step 10

Remove the buns from the oven and let them cool slightly on a wire rack. Drizzle the orange glaze over the warm buns evenly.

Step 11

Serve the orange buns warm or at room temperature. They are best enjoyed fresh on the day they are made.
