Ingredients

  • 8 slices Day-old bread (brioche or white bread)
  • 50 grams Unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 large Eggs
  • 300 milliliters Whole milk
  • 200 milliliters Heavy cream
  • 100 grams Granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon Orange zest
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh orange juice
  • 50 grams Raisins (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon Powdered sugar (for dusting)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease a medium-sized baking dish with butter.

Step 2

Butter each slice of bread generously on one side. Cut the slices diagonally to form triangles.

Step 3

Layer the buttered bread triangles in the greased baking dish, slightly overlapping them. If using raisins, sprinkle them between the layers of bread.

Step 4

In a mixing bowl, whisk the eggs and granulated sugar until well combined and slightly frothy.

Step 5

Add the milk, heavy cream, vanilla extract, orange zest, and fresh orange juice to the egg mixture. Whisk until smooth.

Step 6

Carefully pour the custard mixture over the bread slices, ensuring every piece is coated. Let the pudding sit for 10 minutes to allow the bread to soak up the custard.

Step 7

Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 35–40 minutes, or until the top is golden and the custard is set. A knife inserted into the center should come out clean.

Step 8

Remove the pudding from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Step 9

Serve warm, optionally with a dollop of whipped cream, a scoop of vanilla ice cream, or a drizzle of orange syrup.
