Ingredients

  • 4 cups All-purpose flour
  • 0.25 cups Granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 packet Active dry yeast
  • 1 cup Milk
  • 0.25 cups Butter (unsalted)
  • 1 large Egg
  • 1 tablespoon Orange zest
  • 0.25 cups Orange juice
  • 1.5 cups Powdered sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoons Vanilla extract

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine 1 1/2 cups of the flour, sugar, salt, and yeast. Mix well.

Step 2

In a small saucepan, heat the milk and butter over low heat until warm (120-130°F). Do not let it boil.

Step 3

Pour the warm milk mixture into the dry ingredients and mix until combined.

Step 4

Add the egg and orange zest, and beat the mixture until smooth.

Step 5

Gradually add the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, until a soft dough forms.

Step 6

Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 6-8 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic.

Step 7

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until it doubles in size.

Step 8

Punch the dough down and divide it into 12 equal pieces.

Step 9

Roll each piece into a 10-inch-long rope, then tie it into a loose knot to form a bow.

Step 10

Place the bowknots onto a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet, spacing them evenly apart.

Step 11

Cover the rolls with a kitchen towel and let them rise for an additional 30 minutes.

Step 12

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 13

Bake the bowknots for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown on top.

Step 14

While the rolls are baking, prepare the glaze by whisking together the orange juice, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract in a small bowl.

Step 15

Once the bowknots are done baking, remove them from the oven and transfer to a wire rack.

Step 16

Brush the warm bowknots generously with the orange glaze. Serve warm or at room temperature.
