Ingredients

  • 1 pound Ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoon Garlic powder
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon Butter
  • 1 large Yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 8 ounces Mushrooms, sliced (e.g., cremini or button)
  • 1 tablespoon Soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Balsamic vinegar
  • 4 slices Thick slices of crusty bread (e.g., sourdough or ciabatta)
  • 4 slices Cheddar cheese, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

In a large bowl, mix the ground beef with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each portion into a patty, slightly larger than the bread slices.

Step 2

Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook the burger patties for 3-4 minutes per side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness. Remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside on a plate to rest.

Step 3

In the same skillet, add the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil and the butter. Once the butter is melted, add the sliced onion and cook for 4-5 minutes, stirring frequently, until softened and slightly caramelized.

Step 4

Add the sliced mushrooms to the skillet with the onions. Cook for an additional 5-6 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the mushrooms are golden and tender.

Step 5

Stir in the soy sauce and balsamic vinegar, cooking for 1 more minute to combine. Adjust seasoning with a pinch of salt and pepper, if needed. Remove the onion and mushroom mixture from the heat.

Step 6

Lightly toast the slices of crusty bread in a toaster or under the broiler until golden on top. Place each slice onto a serving plate.

Step 7

Top each slice of toasted bread with a burger patty. Place a slice of cheddar cheese on top of each patty while they are still warm, allowing the cheese to melt slightly.

Step 8

Spoon the onion and mushroom topping generously over each burger. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley, if desired.

Step 9

Serve immediately with your favorite sides or as a standalone meal.
