Ingredients

  • 4 medium Yellow onions
  • 3 tablespoons Butter
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Fresh thyme
  • 0.5 teaspoons Black pepper
  • 1 sheet Puff pastry sheet
  • 1 cup Shredded Gruyere cheese
  • 1 large Egg
  • 1 tablespoon Water

Directions

Step 1

Peel and thinly slice the yellow onions.

Step 2

In a large skillet, melt the butter with the olive oil over medium heat.

Step 3

Add the sliced onions to the skillet and cook, stirring occasionally, for 15 minutes until they turn soft and golden.

Step 4

Stir in the salt, sugar, thyme, and black pepper. Reduce the heat to medium-low and continue to cook for 10 additional minutes, or until the onions are deeply caramelized. Remove from heat and let cool.

Step 5

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Step 6

On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry sheet and transfer it to the prepared baking sheet.

Step 7

Spread the cooled caramelized onions evenly over the puff pastry, leaving a 1-inch border around the edges.

Step 8

Sprinkle the shredded Gruyere cheese on top of the onions.

Step 9

Fold the edges of the puff pastry inward to create a slight crust. Press gently to seal.

Step 10

In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and water to create an egg wash.

Step 11

Brush the edges of the puff pastry with the egg wash.

Step 12

Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the pastry is golden and puffed.

Step 13

Allow to cool for 5 minutes before slicing into pieces. Serve warm and enjoy!
