Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 0.5 pound ground pork
  • 0.5 cup breadcrumbs
  • 0.25 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 0.25 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cloves minced garlic
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 12 ounces spaghetti
  • 28 ounces canned crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 small yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon basil (dried or fresh)
  • 1 teaspoon oregano (dried)
  • 0.25 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 0.5 cup water

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, milk, egg, garlic, parsley, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently with your hands until just combined, being careful not to overwork the mixture.

Step 2

Using your hands, shape the mixture into meatballs about 1.5 inches in diameter. Place them on a baking sheet or plate.

Step 3

Heat olive oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the meatballs in batches, browning them on all sides (about 6-8 minutes per batch). Remove the browned meatballs and set them aside on a plate.

Step 4

In the same skillet, add chopped onion, and sauté until soft and translucent, about 4 minutes.

Step 5

Stir in the tomato paste, cooking it for 1-2 minutes to develop deeper flavor. Then add crushed tomatoes, basil, oregano, red pepper flakes, sugar, and water. Stir to combine.

Step 6

Return the browned meatballs to the skillet, nestling them into the sauce. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer gently for 30-40 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.

Step 7

While the sauce simmers, cook the spaghetti in a large pot of salted boiling water according to the package instructions, until al dente. Drain the spaghetti and set aside.

Step 8

Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning with more salt or pepper if needed.

Step 9

Serve the cooked spaghetti topped with meatballs and ladles of sauce. Sprinkle with additional Parmesan cheese and fresh parsley if desired.

Step 10

Enjoy your hearty and flavorful Old Fashioned Meatballs Spaghetti!
