Rinse the dried navy beans under cold water and remove any debris or damaged beans.
Place the beans in a large pot and cover them with water (about 5 cm above the beans). Let the beans soak overnight (at least 8 hours) or for a quick soak, bring them to a boil for 2 minutes, then turn off the heat and let them sit for 1 hour.
