Ingredients

  • 4 cups All-purpose flour
  • 3 tablespoons Granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 2.25 teaspoons Instant yeast
  • 4 tablespoons Unsalted butter, melted
  • 1.25 cups Buttermilk, warmed (around 100°F or gently warm to the touch)
  • 0.25 cups Warm water
  • 1 large Egg
  • 2 tablespoons Butter, melted for brushing (optional)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, salt, and instant yeast.

Step 2

In a separate bowl, combine the warm buttermilk, warm water, melted butter, and egg. Mix together until well blended.

Step 3

Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients. Stir with a wooden spoon or use the dough hook attachment of a stand mixer to form a soft dough.

Step 4

Knead the dough on a floured surface or using a stand mixer for about 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic. If the dough is sticky, add a little more flour, 1 tablespoon at a time.

Step 5

Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap. Allow it to rise in a warm place for about 1–1.5 hours, or until it doubles in size.

Step 6

Once risen, punch down the dough to release excess air. Divide the dough into 12 equal portions and shape them into balls.

Step 7

Arrange the dough balls in a greased 9x13-inch baking dish or on a parchment-lined sheet pan, leaving slight gaps between them for expansion.

Step 8

Cover the shaped rolls with a clean kitchen towel and let them rise again for 30–45 minutes, or until they puff up and nearly double in size.

Step 9

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) during the second rise.

Step 10

Bake the rolls for 18–20 minutes, or until golden brown on the top and cooked through.

Step 11

If desired, brush the tops of the warm rolls with melted butter immediately after removing from the oven for extra softness and flavor.

Step 12

Allow the rolls to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm with butter, jam, or alongside your favorite dishes!
