Ingredients

  • 6 cups soft bread (cubed)
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 0.75 cup granulated sugar
  • 0.25 cup light brown sugar (packed)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (melted)
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 cup raisins (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9x9-inch baking dish with butter or nonstick spray.

Step 2

Place the soft bread cubes into the prepared baking dish, spreading them out evenly. If using raisins, sprinkle them over the bread cubes.

Step 3

In a medium saucepan, heat the milk and heavy cream over medium-low heat until warmed through but not boiling. Remove from heat and set aside to cool slightly.

Step 4

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the granulated sugar, brown sugar, eggs, melted butter, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.

Step 5

Slowly pour the warmed milk mixture into the egg mixture, whisking constantly to prevent the eggs from curdling.

Step 6

Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes. Use the back of a spoon or your hands to press the bread into the liquid to ensure it absorbs the custard.

Step 7

Let the mixture sit for 10-15 minutes to allow the bread to soak up the custard completely.

Step 8

Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a knife inserted into the center comes out clean.

Step 9

Remove the bread pudding from the oven and let it cool for at least 10 minutes before serving. Serve warm, optionally with a drizzle of caramel sauce or a dollop of whipped cream.
