Ingredients

  • 1 cup Whole milk
  • 5 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons Granulated sugar
  • 2.25 teaspoons Active dry yeast
  • 0.25 cup Warm water
  • 3.5 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1.5 teaspoons Kosher salt
  • 1 large Egg
  • 2 tablespoons Butter for brushing

Directions

Step 1

In a small saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat until bubbles form around the edges but do not let it boil (about 190°F). Remove from heat and stir in the unsalted butter and sugar until melted. Let the mixture cool to lukewarm, about 105–110°F.

Step 2

In a small bowl, dissolve the active dry yeast in the warm water. Allow it to sit for 5–10 minutes, until frothy.

Step 3

In a large mixing bowl, combine the lukewarm milk mixture, yeast mixture, all-purpose flour, kosher salt, and the egg. Mix until a cohesive dough forms.

Step 4

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, knead using a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook attachment for 5–6 minutes.

Step 5

Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Step 6

Punch down the dough and turn it out onto a floured surface. Roll it out to a ½-inch thickness and cut into 3-inch rounds using a cookie cutter or the rim of a drinking glass.

Step 7

Brush each circle lightly with melted butter. Fold each one in half and press gently to seal. Arrange the rolls slightly touching on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

Step 8

Cover the rolls with a kitchen towel and let them rise again for 30–45 minutes, or until puffy.

Step 9

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for 12–15 minutes, or until golden brown on top.

Step 10

Remove from the oven and brush generously with melted butter. Serve warm.
