Ingredients

  • 2 cans (14 oz each) Sweetened condensed milk
  • 1.5 cups Graham cracker crumbs
  • 6 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons Granulated sugar
  • 1 container (8 oz) Whipped topping (or whipped cream)
  • 0.5 cups Pecans (optional, for topping)
  • 2 tablespoons Chocolate shavings (optional, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).

Step 2

Remove the labels from the cans of sweetened condensed milk. Place the unopened cans in a large pot and cover them completely with water.

Step 3

Bring the water to a boil, then lower the heat to a simmer. Cook the cans for 2 hours, ensuring they remain fully submerged in water the entire time. Add more hot water as needed to keep the cans covered.

Step 4

Using tongs, carefully remove the cans from the pot and let them cool completely before opening. The milk will have transformed into rich caramel (dulce de leche).

Step 5

While the caramel cools, prepare the graham cracker crust. In a mixing bowl, combine the graham cracker crumbs, melted butter, and granulated sugar. Stir until the mixture resembles wet sand.

Step 6

Press the graham cracker mixture evenly into the bottom and up the sides of a 9-inch pie pan. Use the back of a spoon or the bottom of a measuring cup to press it firmly.

Step 7

Bake the crust in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes or until lightly golden. Remove the crust and let it cool completely.

Step 8

Once the dulce de leche and crust have cooled, open the cans and pour the caramel into the pie crust. Spread it evenly with a spatula.

Step 9

Refrigerate the pie for at least 4 hours or until the caramel sets.

Step 10

Before serving, spread the whipped topping evenly over the caramel layer. For an extra touch, sprinkle the top with chopped pecans and chocolate shavings if desired.

Step 11

Slice and serve chilled. Store any leftovers in the refrigerator.
