Ingredients

  • 200 grams Glutinous rice flour
  • 180 ml Room temperature water
  • 50 grams Brown sugar
  • 25 grams Fresh ginger
  • 750 ml Water (for syrup)
  • 0 Food coloring (optional)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, place the glutinous rice flour. Gradually add the 180 ml of room temperature water while mixing with your hands or a spatula until it forms a soft, pliable dough.

Step 2

Divide the dough into smaller portions if you'd like to make multi-colored tangyuan. Add a drop or two of food coloring to each portion and knead until the color is evenly distributed.

Step 3

Pinch off small pieces of dough (about the size of a marble) and roll them into smooth balls using your hands. Repeat until all the dough is used up.

Step 4

Peel and slice the ginger into thin pieces. In a medium saucepan, combine the sliced ginger, 750 ml of water, and brown sugar. Bring the mixture to a boil, then lower the heat and let it simmer for 10 minutes to infuse the syrup with the ginger flavor.

Step 5

In a separate large pot, bring water to a rolling boil. Add the rice balls to the boiling water. Stir gently to prevent sticking. The tangyuan will float to the surface once cooked, which typically takes about 3-5 minutes.

Step 6

Using a slotted spoon, transfer the cooked tangyuan into the ginger syrup. Let them simmer in the syrup for 1-2 minutes to absorb some flavor.

Step 7

Ladle the tangyuan and syrup into serving bowls and serve warm. Enjoy your nut-free tangyuan!
