Ingredients

  • 300 grams All-purpose flour
  • 200 grams Unsalted butter
  • 150 grams Granulated sugar
  • 2 large Eggs
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt
  • 6 medium Apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 75 grams Brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons Cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons Lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon Cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons Apricot jam
  • 2 tablespoons Breadcrumbs

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease a 9-inch springform pan lightly with butter.

Step 2

Mix the flour and salt in a large mixing bowl. Carefully cut in the cold, cubed butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Step 3

Add 100 grams of granulated sugar and mix well. Beat one egg and add it along with the vanilla extract to the flour mixture. Stir until a dough forms.

Step 4

Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least 15 minutes.

Step 5

In the meantime, prepare the filling. Peel, core, and slice the apples into thin segments and place them in a mixing bowl.

Step 6

Add the brown sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, and cornstarch. Toss everything together until the apple slices are well coated.

Step 7

Remove the dough from the refrigerator and divide it into two portions: one approximately 2/3 and the other 1/3 of the total dough.

Step 8

Roll out the larger portion on a floured surface and line the bottom and sides of the springform pan, pressing firmly into place.

Step 9

Sprinkle the breadcrumbs evenly across the bottom to prevent sogginess. Spoon the apple mixture on top.

Step 10

Roll out the remaining dough and lattice it over the top of the apple filling.

Step 11

Beat the second egg and brush it over the dough to create a golden sheen while baking.

Step 12

Bake the appeltaart in the preheated oven for 70 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the apples are tender.

Step 13

Once baked, remove from the oven and gently brush the top with apricot jam for a shiny finish.

Step 14

Allow the appeltaart to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then release it from the springform pan.

Step 15

Serve warm or at room temperature, and enjoy your nut-free Dutch Appeltaart!
