Ingredients

  • 6 slices thick-cut bacon
  • 1 medium yellow onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic cloves, minced
  • 3 15-ounce cans canned navy beans, drained and rinsed
  • 0.75 cups ketchup
  • 0.5 cups light brown sugar, packed
  • 2 tablespoons molasses
  • 1.5 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoons smoked paprika
  • 0.5 teaspoons ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoons liquid smoke
  • 0.5 cups water or chicken broth

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Step 2

In a large oven-safe skillet or Dutch oven, cook the bacon slices over medium heat until crispy. Remove the cooked bacon and place it on a paper towel-lined plate to drain. Reserve about 2 tablespoons of the bacon grease in the skillet.

Step 3

Add the diced onion to the skillet and cook over medium heat until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute, stirring frequently to avoid burning.

Step 4

Stir the navy beans into the skillet, followed by the ketchup, brown sugar, molasses, Dijon mustard, apple cider vinegar, smoked paprika, black pepper, and liquid smoke. Mix everything together thoroughly.

Step 5

Crumble the cooked bacon and stir it into the bean mixture.

Step 6

Pour in the water (or chicken broth) and stir to combine. Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat.

Step 7

Once simmering, transfer the skillet or Dutch oven to the preheated oven (if not using an oven-safe skillet, transfer the mixture to a greased casserole dish).

Step 8

Bake uncovered for 75 to 90 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened and the flavors have melded together.

Step 9

Remove from the oven and let cool for 5 to 10 minutes before serving. Enjoy!
