Ingredients

  • 1 pound Ground beef
  • 0.5 pound Ground lamb
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 1 large Yellow onion, diced
  • 2 medium Carrots, diced
  • 2 Celery stalks, diced
  • 3 Garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tablespoons Tomato paste
  • 1 cup Beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 0.75 cup Frozen peas
  • 4 large Russet potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 4 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 0.5 cup Heavy cream
  • 1 cup Shredded cheddar cheese
  • 0.5 cup Breadcrumbs
  • 1.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoon Paprika
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).

Step 2

Place the peeled and cubed potatoes into a large pot of salted water. Bring to a boil and cook for 15-20 minutes, or until fork-tender.

Step 3

While the potatoes cook, heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and lamb, breaking them up with a wooden spoon. Cook until browned and no longer pink, about 8 minutes. Drain excess fat and set aside.

Step 4

In the same skillet, add the diced onion, carrots, and celery. Cook until the vegetables are softened, about 5 minutes. Stir in minced garlic and tomato paste, cooking for another 2 minutes.

Step 5

Return the browned meat to the skillet. Add beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper, and paprika. Mix well and let the mixture simmer for 5 minutes until slightly thickened. Stir in the frozen peas and remove from heat.

Step 6

Drain the cooked potatoes and return them to the pot. Add unsalted butter, heavy cream, shredded cheddar cheese, and 0.5 teaspoon of salt. Mash everything together until smooth and creamy.

Step 7

Spread the meat and vegetable mixture evenly into the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish. Gently layer the mashed potatoes on top, spreading them out evenly.

Step 8

Sprinkle the breadcrumbs evenly over the mashed potatoes for a crispy topping.

Step 9

Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the edges are bubbling.

Step 10

Remove from the oven and let cool for 5 minutes. Garnish with fresh parsley, if desired, and serve warm.
