Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 1 large Yellow onion, diced
  • 4 cloves Garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 pound Ground beef
  • 0.5 pound Italian sausage
  • 6 ounces Tomato paste
  • 28 ounces Crushed tomatoes
  • 15 ounces Canned tomato sauce
  • 0.5 cup Red wine
  • 1 tablespoon Granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons Dried basil
  • 2 teaspoons Dried oregano
  • 0.5 teaspoon Crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Ground black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh parsley, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh basil leaves, chopped (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Heat a large pot over medium heat and add the olive oil.

Step 2

Add the diced onion and sauté for 4-5 minutes until softened and translucent.

Step 3

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

Step 4

Add the ground beef and Italian sausage to the pot, breaking it up with a wooden spoon. Cook until browned and no longer pink, about 8-10 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.

Step 5

Stir in the tomato paste and cook for 2 minutes to deepen its flavor.

Step 6

Pour in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, and red wine. Stir well to combine.

Step 7

Add the sugar, dried basil, dried oregano, crushed red pepper flakes, salt, black pepper, and half of the chopped parsley. Stir to incorporate all the flavors.

Step 8

Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and let it simmer for at least 1 hour, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. For a richer flavor, allow it to simmer for up to 2 hours.

Step 9

Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning if necessary.

Step 10

Before serving, stir in the remaining chopped parsley and fresh basil, if using.

Step 11

Serve hot over cooked spaghetti, and garnish with grated Parmesan if desired.
