Ingredients

  • 2.5 cups All-purpose flour
  • 0.5 teaspoons Baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoons Baking soda
  • 0.25 teaspoons Salt
  • 0.5 cups Unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1 cups Granulated sugar
  • 2 Eggs
  • 1.5 teaspoons Pure vanilla extract
  • 0.5 cups Whole milk
  • 3 cups Powdered sugar (for glaze)
  • 3 tablespoons Water (for glaze)
  • 1 tablespoon Light corn syrup
  • 2 tablespoons Unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 pinch Salt (for glaze)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

Step 2

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

Step 3

Using a stand mixer or hand mixer, cream the butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.

Step 4

Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Then mix in the vanilla extract.

Step 5

On low speed, alternately add the dry ingredients and milk to the wet mixture, starting and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overmix.

Step 6

Using a 1/4-cup measure or cookie scoop, drop the dough onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart. Gently flatten the tops to create even rounds.

Step 7

Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the edges are just starting to turn golden and the cookies spring back when touched lightly. Cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 8

To make the glaze, whisk together the powdered sugar, water, corn syrup, vanilla, and a pinch of salt in a medium bowl until smooth. Divide the glaze evenly into two bowls.

Step 9

In one bowl, whisk in the cocoa powder to create the chocolate glaze. If either glaze is too thick, add a teaspoon of water at a time until it reaches a spreadable consistency.

Step 10

Using an offset spatula or butter knife, spread the vanilla glaze on one half of each cookie and allow it to set slightly (about 10 minutes). Then spread the chocolate glaze on the other half.

Step 11

Let the cookies sit at room temperature until the glazes are fully set, about 30 minutes.

Step 12

Serve and enjoy your homemade New York City Black and White Cookies!
