  • 28 oz crushed tomatoes
  • 6 oz tomato paste

  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 cup red wine
  • 2 tsp dried basil
  • 1.5 tsp dried oregano
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 1.5 tsp salt
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
  • 0.25 tsp crushed red pepper flakes
  • 2 leaves bay leaves
  • 0.5 cup parmesan cheese, grated
  • 0.25 cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 0 water (for boiling pasta)
  • 2 tbsp salt (for boiling pasta)

Directions

Step 1

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the spaghetti according to the package instructions until al dente, then drain and set aside.

Step 2

In a large, heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven, heat the olive oil over medium heat.

Step 3

Add the diced onion and cook until softened, about 5-6 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.

Step 4

Add the ground beef and Italian sausage to the pot. Cook, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon, until browned and fully cooked, about 8-10 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.

Step 5

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, and tomato sauce. Mix well to combine.

Step 6

Pour in the beef broth and red wine. Stir to incorporate.

Step 7

Add the dried basil, oregano, sugar, salt, black pepper, crushed red pepper flakes, and bay leaves. Stir to combine and bring the mixture to a simmer.

Step 8

Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let the sauce simmer gently for 60-75 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.

Step 9

Remove the bay leaves and discard them. Stir in the grated parmesan cheese and chopped fresh parsley.

Step 10

Serve the spaghetti topped with the rich meat sauce. Garnish with additional parmesan cheese and parsley if desired.
