Ingredients

  • 6 medium Russet potatoes
  • 4 tablespoons Butter
  • 3 tablespoons All-purpose flour
  • 2 cups Milk
  • 1 cup Sour cream
  • 2 cups Shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Ground black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoon Garlic powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon Onion powder
  • 1 cup Panko breadcrumbs
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh parsley, chopped (optional for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9x13-inch casserole dish and set aside.

Step 2

Peel and slice the potatoes into thin, even slices (about 1/8-inch thick). Place them into a large bowl and set aside.

Step 3

In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, whisking constantly to form a roux.

Step 4

Gradually whisk in the milk, ensuring that no lumps form. Continue cooking until the sauce thickens, about 3-4 minutes.

Step 5

Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the sour cream, 1 1/2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix until the cheese is fully melted and the sauce is smooth.

Step 6

Pour the cheese sauce over the sliced potatoes and gently toss to coat all the slices evenly.

Step 7

Layer the potatoes into the prepared casserole dish, spreading them out for even cooking.

Step 8

Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar cheese over the top.

Step 9

In a small bowl, combine the panko breadcrumbs with 1 tablespoon of melted butter (optional for extra crispiness) and sprinkle this mixture evenly over the casserole.

Step 10

Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.

Step 11

Remove from the oven and let the casserole rest for 5-10 minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped parsley, if desired.

Step 12

Serve warm and enjoy!
