Ingredients

  • 3 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) Active dry yeast
  • 0.75 cup Warm water
  • 0.33 cup Plain yogurt
  • 0.25 cup Milk
  • 1 tablespoon Granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Baking powder
  • 2 tablespoons Vegetable oil
  • 3 tablespoons Butter (melted) or ghee
  • 1 clove Garlic (optional, minced for garlic naan)

Directions

Step 1

In a small bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the active dry yeast over the top and let it sit for 10 minutes until it becomes frothy.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and baking powder.

Step 3

Add the yogurt, milk, and vegetable oil to the yeast mixture. Stir to combine.

Step 4

Slowly pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, mixing with a spoon or your hands until a sticky dough forms.

Step 5

Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 8 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour, 1 tablespoon at a time.

Step 6

Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until it doubles in size.

Step 7

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 6 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball.

Step 8

Preheat a skillet or cast iron pan over medium-high heat. Roll out one dough ball into an oval or teardrop shape, about 1/4-inch thick.

Step 9

If using garlic, sprinkle the minced garlic onto the rolled-out dough and press it gently so it adheres.

Step 10

Place the naan on the hot skillet. Cook for about 1-2 minutes, or until bubbles form on the surface and the bottom is golden brown. Flip the naan and cook the other side for another 1 minute.

Step 11

Remove the naan from the skillet and brush it generously with melted butter or ghee. Repeat with the remaining dough portions.

Step 12

Serve the naan warm, paired with curries, dals, or as a standalone snack.
