Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic cloves, minced
  • 28 ounces crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 0.5 teaspoon red chili flakes (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley or basil, chopped (for garnish, optional)
  • 0.5 cup water (if needed to thin sauce)

Directions

Step 1

Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat.

Step 2

Add the finely chopped onion and sauté for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened and translucent.

Step 3

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute, until fragrant.

Step 4

Add the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, dried oregano, dried basil, red chili flakes (if using), salt, black pepper, and granulated sugar. Stir everything well to combine.

Step 5

Lower the heat to medium-low and let the sauce simmer uncovered for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. If the sauce becomes too thick, add water a little at a time until the desired consistency is reached.

Step 6

Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Add more salt, pepper, or sugar depending on your preference.

Step 7

Once done, remove the saucepan from heat. If desired, garnish with freshly chopped parsley or basil before serving.

Step 8

Serve the sauce over cooked spaghetti or your favorite pasta, and enjoy!
