Ingredients

  • 1 pound Ground beef or lamb
  • 1 large Yellow onion, diced
  • 2 medium Carrots, diced
  • 1 cup Frozen peas
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons Tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup Beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 3 cups Mashed potatoes (prepared ahead)
  • 4 tablespoons Butter
  • 0.5 cup Shredded cheddar cheese (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 2

In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef or lamb until browned and fully cooked. Drain any excess grease and set the meat aside.

Step 3

In the same skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add diced onion and carrots, and sauté for 5 minutes or until softened.

Step 4

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.

Step 5

Return the cooked meat to the skillet. Add tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, and beef broth. Stir to combine.

Step 6

Add the frozen peas, salt, and black pepper. Simmer the mixture for 5 minutes until slightly thickened. Remove from heat.

Step 7

Transfer the meat and vegetable mixture to a 9x13-inch baking dish, spreading it out evenly.

Step 8

Top the mixture with the prepared mashed potatoes, smoothing the surface with a spatula to cover the filling completely.

Step 9

Dot the top of the mashed potatoes with the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter and sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese if using.

Step 10

Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden and slightly crispy.

Step 11

Remove from the oven and let the shepherd’s pie rest for 5 minutes before serving.
