Ingredients

  • 4 cups Canned navy beans
  • 6 slices Thick-cut bacon
  • 1 large Yellow onion
  • 3 cloves Garlic cloves
  • 1 cup Ketchup
  • 0.5 cup Brown sugar
  • 0.25 cup Molasses
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Apple cider vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons Smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon Ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Liquid smoke (optional)
  • 0.5 cup Water

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Step 2

In a large skillet, cook the bacon slices over medium heat until crispy, about 8 minutes. Remove the bacon from the pan and set aside on a paper towel-lined plate to drain. Save about 2 tablespoons of the rendered bacon grease in the skillet.

Step 3

Finely chop the onion and garlic. In the same skillet with the bacon grease, sauté the onion over medium heat until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

Step 4

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ketchup, brown sugar, molasses, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, apple cider vinegar, smoked paprika, black pepper, salt, and liquid smoke (if using). Stir well to form a thick sauce.

Step 5

Add the sautéed onion and garlic to the sauce, then stir in the water to loosen the mixture slightly.

Step 6

Drain and rinse the navy beans, then pour them into a 9x13-inch baking dish. Pour the sauce over the beans and mix thoroughly to ensure the beans are evenly coated.

Step 7

Crumble the cooked bacon into small pieces and sprinkle it over the top of the beans.

Step 8

Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes.

Step 9

After 30 minutes, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes to allow the top to caramelize slightly.

Step 10

Remove the dish from the oven and let the beans cool for 5-10 minutes before serving. Enjoy these flavorful BBQ baked beans as a side dish to your favorite grilled foods!
