Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 0.75 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 0.5 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans or line them with parchment paper.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

Step 3

Add the eggs, whole milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Beat with a hand mixer or stand mixer on medium speed for about 2 minutes, scraping the sides of the bowl as needed.

Step 4

Carefully stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth and thin. Do not overmix.

Step 5

Evenly divide the batter between the prepared cake pans.

Step 6

Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.

Step 7

Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 8

Frost and decorate the cake as desired. My mom always used a classic chocolate buttercream for extra indulgence!
