Ingredients

  • 4 cups yams (peeled and cut into 1-inch cubes)
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 0.5 cup brown sugar (packed)
  • 0.25 cup pure maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 0.25 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 cup mini marshmallows (optional)
  • 0.5 cup chopped pecans (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish and set aside.

Step 2

Place the peeled and cubed yams in a large pot and add enough water to cover them. Bring the pot to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat to medium and simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until the yams are fork-tender. Drain the yams and transfer them to the prepared baking dish.

Step 3

In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the brown sugar, maple syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract, and salt. Continue stirring until the mixture is smooth and just begins to bubble, about 1-2 minutes.

Step 4

Pour the butter mixture evenly over the yams, gently tossing to coat them well.

Step 5

If using, sprinkle the chopped pecans over the yams for extra crunch and texture.

Step 6

Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes.

Step 7

Remove the foil, gently stir the yams, and optionally add the mini marshmallows on top. Return the dish to the oven and bake for an additional 10 minutes, or until the marshmallows are golden and gooey.

Step 8

Remove from the oven and let the yams cool for 5 minutes before serving. Serve warm and enjoy!
