Preheat your oven to 175°C (350°F) and line a 9x13-inch rectangular baking pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang on the sides for easy removal.
In a heatproof bowl, combine the unsalted butter and dark chocolate. Set the bowl over a pot of simmering water (double boiler) and stir until melted and smooth. Remove from the heat and let cool for 5 minutes.
In a large mixing bowl, stir together the granulated sugar, light brown sugar, and melted chocolate mixture until well combined.
Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
In a separate bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, and salt. Gradually fold the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
If using chocolate chips and/or chopped nuts, gently fold them into the batter.
Pour the brownie batter into the prepared baking pan and spread it evenly with a spatula.
Bake in the preheated oven for 22-25 minutes, or until the top is set and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs. Be careful not to overbake as the brownies will continue to set as they cool.
Remove the pan from the oven and let the brownies cool completely in the pan on a wire rack.
Once cooled, use the parchment paper overhang to lift the brownies out of the pan. Cut them into 12 squares and serve. Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days.
