Ingredients

  • 1 lb Ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 0.5 lb Italian sausage
  • 0.5 cup Breadcrumbs
  • 0.25 cup Parmesan cheese (grated)
  • 1 large Egg
  • 2 cloves Garlic (minced)
  • 1 tsp Dried oregano
  • 1 tsp Dried basil
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 0.5 tsp Ground black pepper
  • 2 tbsp Olive oil
  • 2 cups Marinara sauce
  • 4 pieces Sub rolls
  • 1 cup Mozzarella cheese (sliced or shredded)
  • 2 tbsp Fresh parsley (chopped, optional)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, Italian sausage, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, egg, minced garlic, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently with your hands until all the ingredients are just combined. Be careful not to overmix.

Step 3

Roll the mixture into golf-ball-sized meatballs, approximately 1.5 inches in diameter. This should yield about 16-18 meatballs.

Step 4

Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Working in batches, sear the meatballs on all sides until browned, about 2-3 minutes per side. The goal is not to cook them through but to develop a nice crust.

Step 5

Transfer the seared meatballs to a baking dish and pour the marinara sauce evenly over them. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes.

Step 6

While the meatballs are baking, prepare the sub rolls by slicing them in half lengthwise without cutting all the way through. Lightly toast them in the oven or on a hot skillet if desired.

Step 7

Remove the meatballs from the oven, uncover the dish, and evenly place them into the prepared sub rolls. Spoon additional marinara sauce over the meatballs, if desired.

Step 8

Top each sub with mozzarella cheese. Place the assembled subs on a baking sheet and return them to the oven for 5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Step 9

Garnish the subs with chopped fresh parsley, if using. Serve immediately and enjoy your movie night!
