Ingredients

  • 500 grams Ground beef (or lamb)
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 1 medium Yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves Garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 medium Carrots, peeled and diced
  • 1 cup Frozen peas
  • 2 tablespoons Tomato paste
  • 1 cup Beef or vegetable broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoon Paprika
  • 4 cups Mashed potatoes (prepared using boiled potatoes, butter, and milk)
  • 1 tablespoon Butter
  • 0.25 cup Grated Parmesan cheese (optional, for topping)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).

Step 2

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until translucent, about 3-4 minutes.

Step 3

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 1 minute until fragrant.

Step 4

Add the ground beef (or lamb) to the skillet and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula. This should take about 6-8 minutes.

Step 5

Mix in the diced carrots and cook for 3-5 minutes to soften them slightly.

Step 6

Stir in the tomato paste, beef (or vegetable) broth, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and paprika. Let the mixture simmer for 5-7 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken.

Step 7

Fold in the frozen peas and cook for an additional 2 minutes. Remove the filling from heat and set aside.

Step 8

Transfer the meat and vegetable mixture into a 9x9-inch (or similar size) baking dish, spreading it out evenly.

Step 9

Spoon or pipe the prepared mashed potatoes over the meat mixture, spreading it evenly to cover the filling completely.

Step 10

Dot the top of the mashed potatoes with butter and sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese, if using.

Step 11

Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.

Step 12

Remove the Shepherd's Pie from the oven and let it rest for 5-10 minutes before serving. Enjoy!
