Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20)
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 medium green bell pepper, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 14.5-ounce can diced tomatoes (with their juice)
  • 1 8-ounce can tomato sauce
  • 0.5 cup uncooked white rice
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional, for topping)

Directions

Step 1

In a large skillet or Dutch oven, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned, breaking it up with a spatula as it cooks. Drain excess fat if needed.

Step 2

Add the chopped onion, diced green bell pepper, and minced garlic to the skillet. Cook until softened, about 5 minutes.

Step 3

Stir in the diced tomatoes (with their juice), tomato sauce, uncooked white rice, water, Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper, and chili powder. Mix well to combine.

Step 4

Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Cover the skillet with a lid and cook for about 25 minutes, or until the rice is tender and has absorbed most of the liquid. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

Step 5

Once the rice is cooked, taste and adjust the seasoning if needed. If desired, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the top and cover for an additional 2-3 minutes until the cheese melts.

Step 6

Serve hot and enjoy Momma's Texas Hash with a side of crusty bread or a simple green salad for a complete meal!
