Ingredients

  • 2 pounds beef round steak
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 large yellow onion
  • 1 medium green bell pepper
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1 15-ounce can diced tomatoes (canned)
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 3 medium carrots
  • 2 celery stalks
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 325°F (165°C).

Step 2

Trim excess fat from the beef round steak and cut it into portion-sized pieces.

Step 3

In a shallow dish, combine the flour, salt, and black pepper. Dredge each piece of steak in the flour mixture, coating both sides.

Step 4

Heat the vegetable oil in a large oven-safe skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the floured steak pieces in batches and sear until browned on both sides. Remove the steak and set it aside.

Step 5

Peel and thinly slice the onion. Core and thinly slice the green bell pepper. Mince the garlic.

Step 6

In the same skillet, add the onion, bell pepper, and garlic. Sauté for 3-4 minutes until the vegetables start to soften.

Step 7

Add the diced tomatoes (with their juices), beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and paprika to the skillet. Stir to combine.

Step 8

Return the browned steak pieces to the skillet, nestling them into the sauce. Peel and slice the carrots, and chop the celery into bite-sized pieces. Add the carrots and celery on top of the meat.

Step 9

Cover the skillet or Dutch oven with a lid or aluminum foil and transfer it to the preheated oven.

Step 10

Bake for 1.5 to 2 hours, or until the steak is tender enough to cut with a fork.

Step 11

Remove the skillet from the oven and garnish the dish with freshly chopped parsley before serving.

Step 12

Serve the steak alongside mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or steamed rice to soak up the delicious sauce.
