Ingredients

  • 1 head green cabbage
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 cup cooked white rice
  • 1 small, finely diced onion
  • 1 egg
  • 0.25 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
  • 24 ounces tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 0.5 cup water

Directions

Step 1

Carefully remove the outer leaves of the cabbage and set aside any damaged ones. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.

Step 2

Blanch the cabbage by immersing the whole head into the boiling water for 2-3 minutes. Remove and let cool enough to handle. Peel off about 12 large, intact leaves and set aside.

Step 3

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, cooked rice, diced onion, egg, milk, salt, pepper, and parsley. Mix well to form the filling.

Step 4

Cut a small V-shaped notch from the base of each leaf to remove the tough stem portion. Lay each cabbage leaf flat and place about 2-3 tablespoons of filling in the center. Fold the sides over the filling and roll tightly into a cylinder. Repeat with all leaves and filling.

Step 5

In a separate bowl, whisk together the tomato sauce, sugar, and water to form the cooking liquid.

Step 6

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

Step 7

Spread a thin layer of the tomato sauce mixture on the bottom of a large, deep casserole dish. Arrange the cabbage rolls seam-side down in a single layer inside the dish.

Step 8

Pour the remaining tomato sauce mixture evenly over the cabbage rolls, ensuring they are mostly submerged in the sauce.

Step 9

Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour and 30 minutes, or until the cabbage is tender and the filling is cooked through.

Step 10

Remove from the oven and let rest for 5 minutes before serving. Enjoy!
