Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large, diced yellow onion
  • 4 minced garlic cloves
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 0.5 pound ground Italian sausage
  • 28 ounces canned crushed tomatoes
  • 6 ounces tomato paste
  • 15 ounces tomato sauce
  • 0.5 cup water
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1.5 teaspoons dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 0.5 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 0.25 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 2 tablespoons, chopped fresh parsley

Directions

Step 1

Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.

Step 2

Add the diced onion and sauté for 5-7 minutes until softened and translucent.

Step 3

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant, being careful not to burn it.

Step 4

Add the ground beef and Italian sausage to the pot. Cook, breaking it apart with a spoon, until browned and cooked through. Drain any excess fat.

Step 5

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, and tomato sauce. Add the water and mix well.

Step 6

Sprinkle in the sugar, dried basil, dried oregano, dried thyme, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes. Stir to combine.

Step 7

Bring the sauce to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover the pot partially with a lid, allowing some steam to escape.

Step 8

Simmer the sauce for 1 to 1.5 hours, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.

Step 9

Just before serving, stir in the chopped fresh parsley.

Step 10

Serve hot over your favorite cooked pasta and enjoy!
