Ingredients

  • 16 ounces spaghetti
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium yellow onion
  • 4 cloves garlic
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 28 ounces canned crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley
  • 0.5 cup Parmesan cheese
  • 4 quarts water (for boiling pasta)
  • 2 teaspoons salt (for boiling pasta)

Directions

Step 1

Bring 4 quarts of water to a boil in a large pot. Add 2 teaspoons of salt to the water.

Step 2

Cook the spaghetti according to the package instructions until al dente, usually about 8-10 minutes. Drain the spaghetti and set aside.

Step 3

While the pasta cooks, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

Step 4

Finely chop the yellow onion and mince the garlic cloves.

Step 5

Add the chopped onion to the skillet and sauté for 3-4 minutes until soft and translucent.

Step 6

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute, being careful not to burn it.

Step 7

Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon. Cook for 6-8 minutes until browned and cooked through. Drain excess fat if necessary.

Step 8

Stir in the canned crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, dried basil, dried oregano, 1 teaspoon of salt, 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, and the sugar.

Step 9

Simmer the sauce over low heat for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 10

While the sauce is simmering, finely chop the fresh parsley and grate the Parmesan cheese if not pre-shredded.

Step 11

After the sauce has simmered, taste and adjust seasonings if needed.

Step 12

Toss the cooked spaghetti into the skillet with the sauce, stirring to coat the noodles evenly.

Step 13

Serve hot, garnished with chopped parsley and a generous sprinkle of Parmesan cheese.
