Ingredients

  • 2 cups Dried navy beans
  • 10 cups Water
  • 6 slices Bacon, diced
  • 1 large Onion, finely chopped
  • 0.333 cup Molasses
  • 0.25 cup Brown sugar
  • 0.5 cup Ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon Ground black pepper
  • 2 cups Water (for baking)

Directions

Step 1

Rinse the dried navy beans thoroughly under cold water and remove any debris.

Step 2

In a large pot, combine the beans with 10 cups of water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat.

Step 3

Reduce to a simmer and cook the beans for 1 hour, or until tender but not falling apart. Drain and set aside.

Step 4

Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C).

Step 5

In a large cast-iron skillet or Dutch oven, fry the diced bacon over medium heat until crispy. Remove the bacon pieces and set aside on a plate lined with paper towels.

Step 6

Using the remaining bacon grease in the skillet, sauté the finely chopped onion until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.

Step 7

Stir in the molasses, brown sugar, ketchup, yellow mustard, apple cider vinegar, salt, and ground black pepper. Mix well until combined and slightly bubbling.

Step 8

Add the cooked beans and crispy bacon pieces into the skillet or transfer everything to a large baking dish. Gently mix to coat the beans evenly with the sauce.

Step 9

Pour 2 cups of water over the beans and stir to ensure the liquid is evenly distributed.

Step 10

Cover the skillet or baking dish with a lid or aluminum foil, and bake in the preheated oven for 4 hours, stirring every hour to ensure the beans don’t stick to the bottom.

Step 11

After 4 hours, uncover the dish and bake for an additional 30–45 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened to your liking.

Step 12

Remove from the oven and let the beans cool for 10 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to meld together.

Step 13

Serve warm as a side or main dish and enjoy the comforting taste of homemade baked beans!
