Ingredients

  • 1 piece Pre-made pie crust (9-inch)
  • 0.75 cup Granulated sugar
  • 0.25 cup All-purpose flour
  • 0.25 teaspoon Salt
  • 2.5 cups Whole milk
  • 3 large Egg yolks
  • 2 tablespoons Unsalted butter
  • 1.5 teaspoons Vanilla extract
  • 1 cup Whipped cream (optional, for topping)
  • 1 dash Nutmeg (optional, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the pre-made pie crust in a 9-inch pie dish and crimp the edges as desired. Use a fork to prick the bottom of the crust.

Step 2

Place the pie crust in the oven and pre-bake for 10-12 minutes, or until lightly golden. Remove from the oven and allow it to cool completely.

Step 3

In a medium saucepan, whisk together granulated sugar, flour, and salt until combined.

Step 4

Slowly whisk in the milk, ensuring there are no lumps. Turn the heat to medium and cook the mixture, stirring constantly, until it thickens and bubbles. This should take about 7-10 minutes.

Step 5

In a small bowl, lightly beat the egg yolks. Gradually add a few tablespoons of the hot milk mixture into the yolks, whisking constantly to temper the eggs.

Step 6

Slowly pour the tempered yolk mixture back into the saucepan with the remaining milk mixture. Stir constantly and cook for another 2-3 minutes, or until very thick.

Step 7

Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the butter and vanilla extract until smooth.

Step 8

Pour the custard filling into the pre-baked pie crust, smoothing the top with a spatula.

Step 9

Let the pie cool at room temperature for 20 minutes, then transfer to the refrigerator to chill for at least 2 hours, or until set.

Step 10

Before serving, optionally top the pie with whipped cream and a dash of nutmeg for garnish. Slice and enjoy!
