Ingredients

  • 1 cup Unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups Powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Milk (or heavy cream for a richer texture)
  • 2 teaspoons Vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch Pinch of salt

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, use an electric mixer or a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment to beat the softened butter on medium speed until creamy and smooth, about 2 minutes.

Step 2

Gradually add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, beating on low speed after each addition to prevent a sugar cloud. Once all the sugar is incorporated, increase the speed to medium and mix until well combined.

Step 3

Add the milk (or heavy cream), vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt to the bowl. Beat the mixture on medium-high speed until the icing is light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.

Step 4

If the icing is too thick, add additional milk (or heavy cream), one teaspoon at a time, until your desired consistency is reached. If it’s too thin, add more powdered sugar, one tablespoon at a time.

Step 5

Taste the icing and adjust the flavor as needed. Add a tiny bit more vanilla extract for extra flavor, if desired.

Step 6

For colored icing, divide the batch into smaller bowls and mix in food coloring a few drops at a time until you achieve your preferred shade.

Step 7

Spread or pipe onto your cake, cupcakes, or cookies. Use immediately or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week. Let it come to room temperature and briefly re-whip before using.
