Ingredients

  • 8 large Apples (mix of sweet and tart, such as Fuji and Granny Smith)
  • 2 medium Oranges
  • 3 sticks Cinnamon sticks
  • 1 teaspoon Whole cloves
  • 0.5 teaspoon Ground nutmeg
  • 0.25 cup Brown sugar (optional, adjust to taste)
  • 12 cups Water

Directions

Step 1

Wash and roughly chop the apples and oranges. Remove any seeds, but you can leave the peels on for extra flavor.

Step 2

Place the chopped apples and oranges into a large stockpot. Add the cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, ground nutmeg, and brown sugar (if using).

Step 3

Pour 12 cups of water into the pot, ensuring that the fruits and spices are fully submerged.

Step 4

Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and cover the pot with a lid.

Step 5

Simmer the cider for 2 hours, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking and to help the fruit break down.

Step 6

After 2 hours, use a potato masher or wooden spoon to mash the softened fruit in the pot. This releases even more flavor into the cider.

Step 7

Return the cider to a low simmer for an additional 30 minutes, covered.

Step 8

Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a large bowl or another pot. Discard the solids.

Step 9

Taste and adjust sweetness, adding more brown sugar if desired. Serve warm in mugs or allow to cool and store in the refrigerator for up to one week.

Step 10

Optional: Garnish each serving with a cinnamon stick or a slice of fresh apple for a festive touch.
