Ingredients

  • 2.5 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon Baking soda
  • 0.5 teaspoon Salt
  • 2 cups Granulated sugar
  • 1 cup Unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 Eggs
  • 1 cup Buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 6 bars Hershey's milk chocolate bars (1.55 oz each)
  • 0.5 cup Boiling water
  • 0.25 cup Powdered sugar (optional, for garnish)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x13-inch baking dish or two 9-inch round cake pans.

Step 2

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

Step 3

In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar using an electric mixer until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.

Step 4

Add the eggs one at a time to the butter and sugar mixture, mixing well after each addition.

Step 5

Continuing with the electric mixer on low speed, alternate adding the flour mixture and the buttermilk to the wet ingredients. Start and end with the dry ingredients, mixing just until combined. Stir in vanilla extract.

Step 6

Break the Hershey's bars into pieces and melt them completely using a double boiler or by microwaving in 20-second intervals, stirring often.

Step 7

Slowly stir the melted Hershey's chocolate into the batter until smooth and evenly incorporated.

Step 8

Carefully add the boiling water to the batter and stir until smooth. The batter will be thin, but this is normal.

Step 9

Pour the batter evenly into the prepared baking dish or cake pans.

Step 10

Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes if using a 9x13-inch pan, or 25-30 minutes if using layered round pans, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Step 11

Remove the cake(s) from the oven and let cool in the pan(s) for 10-15 minutes. Then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 12

If desired, dust with powdered sugar before serving or frost with your favorite chocolate frosting.
