Ingredients

  • 12 ounces egg noodles
  • 8 tablespoons butter
  • 1 large yellow onion
  • 1 medium head green cabbage
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • 4 slices bacon (optional)

Directions

Step 1

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the egg noodles according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Step 2

While the noodles cook, slice the cabbage into thin strips and dice the onion into small pieces.

Step 3

If using bacon, cook the slices in a large skillet over medium heat until crispy. Remove the bacon, crumble, and set aside. Reserve the rendered bacon fat in the skillet for added flavor.

Step 4

In the same large skillet (clean if not using bacon), melt the butter over medium heat. If using bacon fat, reduce the butter to 6 tablespoons.

Step 5

Add the chopped onion to the skillet and cook, stirring frequently, until softened and golden, about 5 minutes.

Step 6

Add the cabbage to the skillet, stirring to coat it in the butter mixture. Sprinkle with salt, pepper, and garlic powder, if desired. Cook for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender and slightly caramelized.

Step 7

Add the cooked noodles to the skillet, stirring to combine with the cabbage and onions. Cook for 3–5 minutes to ensure everything is heated through and well mixed.

Step 8

If using bacon, sprinkle the crumbled pieces over the dish before serving.

Step 9

Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Serve warm and enjoy!
