Ingredients

  • 1 cup Dalia (cracked wheat)
  • 3 cups Water
  • 1 tablespoon Ghee (clarified butter)
  • 0.5 teaspoon Mustard seeds
  • 0.5 teaspoon Cumin seeds
  • 1 medium Onion, finely chopped
  • 1 Green chili, finely chopped
  • 1 small Carrot, finely diced
  • 0.25 cup Green peas
  • 0.25 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 2 tablespoons Coriander leaves, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon Lemon juice

Directions

Step 1

Heat a heavy-bottomed pan on medium heat and add the ghee.

Step 2

Once the ghee melts, add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Let them splutter for a few seconds.

Step 3

Add the finely chopped onion and green chili, sautéing until the onions turn translucent.

Step 4

Stir in the diced carrot and green peas, cooking for 2-3 minutes until slightly tender.

Step 5

Rinse the dalia thoroughly under running water and drain well.

Step 6

Add the rinsed dalia to the pan with the vegetables, and dry roast it in the ghee for 3-4 minutes until it releases a nutty aroma.

Step 7

Stir in the turmeric powder and salt, mixing everything well.

Step 8

Pour 3 cups of water into the pan. Stir and bring the mixture to a boil.

Step 9

Reduce the heat to low, cover with a lid, and let the dalia simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.

Step 10

Once the dalia is cooked and the water is absorbed, turn off the heat. The consistency should be soft and slightly porridge-like.

Step 11

Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and drizzle with lemon juice before serving.

Step 12

Serve hot and enjoy Mom's favourite comfort breakfast.
