Ingredients

  • 4 pieces cube steak
  • 0.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoons black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoons paprika
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
  • 1.5 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water

Directions

Step 1

In a shallow dish, combine the flour, salt, black pepper, and paprika. Mix well.

Step 2

Dredge the cube steak pieces in the seasoned flour, coating both sides. Shake off excess flour and set aside.

Step 3

Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the floured cube steaks and sear for 2-3 minutes on each side, until browned. Remove steaks from the skillet and set aside.

Step 4

In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and mushrooms. Sauté for 5-7 minutes, or until the onions are softened and beginning to caramelize.

Step 5

Add the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce to the skillet. Stir to combine, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan.

Step 6

Return the cube steaks to the skillet. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 30-35 minutes, until the meat is tender.

Step 7

In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch and water to create a slurry. Gradually stir the slurry into the skillet and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, or until the gravy has thickened.

Step 8

Serve the cube steaks smothered in the onion-mushroom gravy. Pair with mashed potatoes or rice for the ultimate comfort meal!
