Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1.5 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 0.5 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 0.25 teaspoons salt
  • 0.25 cup granulated sugar (for rolling)

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.

Step 2

In a large mixing bowl, cream together the unsalted butter and 1.5 cups of granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.

Step 3

Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.

Step 4

In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, cream of tartar, and salt.

Step 5

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix the dough.

Step 6

Scoop out about 1 tablespoon of dough and roll it into a ball with your hands.

Step 7

Roll the dough ball in the additional 0.25 cup of granulated sugar to coat it completely.

Step 8

Place the sugar-coated dough balls on the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart.

Step 9

Bake in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are just set and the tops have a cracked appearance. The centers should still look slightly soft.

Step 10

Remove the cookies from the oven and let them cool on the baking sheets for 2-3 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 11

Store the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. Enjoy these delightful treats with a cold glass of milk or a warm mug of coffee!
