Ingredients

  • 12 cups day-old bread (white, wheat, or sourdough)
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 large yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 3 stalks celery, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon fresh sage, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon dried poultry seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 2.5 cups chicken or turkey broth
  • 2 eggs, lightly beaten

Directions

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Step 2

Cut the bread into 1-inch cubes. Spread them evenly on a baking sheet and toast in the oven for 10-15 minutes, or until dry and golden. Remove and let cool.

Step 3

In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and celery, and sauté for 5-7 minutes, or until softened and fragrant.

Step 4

Stir in the parsley, sage, thyme, and poultry seasoning. Cook for 1 more minute to release the flavors. Remove from heat.

Step 5

In a large mixing bowl, combine the toasted bread cubes, the cooked onion and celery mixture, salt, and pepper. Mix well.

Step 6

Heat the chicken or turkey broth in a small saucepan until warm but not boiling. Gradually pour the broth over the bread mixture, tossing gently to moisten evenly. The mixture should be moist but not soggy.

Step 7

Lightly beat the eggs and mix them into the stuffing. The eggs will help bind the stuffing as it bakes.

Step 8

Transfer the mixture into a greased 9x13-inch baking dish and spread it out evenly.

Step 9

Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes.

Step 10

Remove the foil and bake for another 15 minutes, or until the top is golden and slightly crisp.

Step 11

Serve warm as a comforting side dish for your favorite holiday meal.
