Ingredients

  • 2.5 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 cup Unsalted butter (cold, cubed)
  • 2 tablespoons Granulated sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoons Salt
  • 6 tablespoons Ice water
  • 6 medium Apples (such as Granny Smith, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced)
  • 0.5 cup Brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon Ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon Lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons All-purpose flour (for filling)
  • 2 tablespoons Milk (for brushing crust)
  • 2 tablespoons Coarse sugar (optional topping)

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, and salt. Add the cold, cubed butter, and cut it into the flour using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Step 2

Gradually add the ice water, one tablespoon at a time, mixing just until the dough comes together. Divide the dough in half, form each half into a disc, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

Step 3

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9-inch tart pan or pie dish.

Step 4

In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and 2 tablespoons of flour. Toss to coat the apples evenly, then set aside.

Step 5

On a lightly floured surface, roll out one of the chilled dough discs into a circle slightly larger than your tart pan. Gently transfer the dough into the pan, pressing it into the bottom and up the sides.

Step 6

Trim off any excess dough, leaving about 1/2 inch overhang. Pour the prepared apple filling into the crust and spread it evenly.

Step 7

Roll out the second dough disc and cut it into strips to create a lattice pattern on top of the tart. Lay the strips over the apples in a crisscross pattern and press the edges to seal. Trim any excess dough.

Step 8

Brush the lattice crust with milk and sprinkle with coarse sugar for a golden, crunchy finish, if desired.

Step 9

Bake the tart in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the apples are tender.

Step 10

Remove from the oven and let the tart cool for 20-30 minutes before slicing and serving. Enjoy Mom's Apple Tart warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream!
