Ingredients

  • 2 cups Warm water
  • 1 tablespoon Granulated sugar
  • 1 packet Active dry yeast
  • 1 cup Milk
  • 0.25 cups Unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 2 tablespoons Granulated sugar (additional)
  • 6 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon Vegetable oil

Directions

Step 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, 1 tablespoon of sugar, and the yeast. Stir gently and let the mixture sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy, which indicates the yeast is activated.

Step 2

While the yeast is proofing, warm the milk in a small saucepan over medium-low heat until lukewarm. Remove from heat and stir in the butter, salt, and 2 tablespoons of sugar. Allow the mixture to cool slightly so it is not too hot for the yeast.

Step 3

Add the milk mixture to the frothy yeast, stirring well to combine.

Step 4

Gradually add in the flour, 1 cup at a time, stirring with a wooden spoon or using a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment. Mix until the dough comes together and pulls away from the sides of the bowl.

Step 5

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 6-8 minutes, or until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, knead the dough using the stand mixer on low speed for 5 minutes.

Step 6

Place the dough in a large, lightly oiled bowl. Cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and allow it to rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until it has doubled in size.

Step 7

Punch down the dough to release the air. Divide it into 24 equal portions and shape each portion into a ball.

Step 8

Place the dough balls onto a lightly greased baking sheet or in a greased 9x13-inch pan, leaving some space between them for expansion. Cover with a kitchen towel and let them rise again for 30-40 minutes, or until they have doubled in size.

Step 9

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Step 10

Bake the buns for 18-20 minutes, or until they are golden brown on top.

Step 11

Remove the buns from the oven and brush the tops lightly with melted butter for extra softness and flavor.

Step 12

Allow the buns to cool slightly before serving. These are best enjoyed fresh but can also be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
