Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 0.5 pound Italian sausage
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 yellow onion, finely diced
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 28 ounces canned crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 0.5 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
  • 0.25 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Directions

Step 1

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet or saucepan over medium-high heat.

Step 2

Add the ground beef and Italian sausage to the pan. Cook, stirring and breaking up the meat, until browned and cooked through, about 6-8 minutes.

Step 3

Remove the browned meat from the pan and drain off the excess grease. Set aside.

Step 4

In the same pan, add the diced onion and cook until softened and lightly translucent, about 4-5 minutes.

Step 5

Add the minced garlic to the pan and sauté for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

Step 6

Return the cooked meat to the pan and stir to combine.

Step 7

Pour in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, beef broth, oregano, basil, sugar, red pepper flakes, salt, and black pepper. Stir well to combine.

Step 8

Lower the heat to a gentle simmer and cook the sauce, uncovered, for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.

Step 9

Taste and adjust seasoning, adding more salt or pepper if needed.

Step 10

Stir in the fresh parsley and grated Parmesan cheese just before serving for added flavor.

Step 11

Serve the sauce hot over your favorite cooked pasta and enjoy!
